Raiders' Josh McDaniels 'thrilled' to work with Derek Carr 'this season and beyond'

Before the NFL quarterback carousel truly began to spin in March, rumors spread throughout the football community that Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr could be had in a trade for the right price.

Newly hired head coach Josh McDaniels appeared to pour cold water over such stories in February and again last month. The Raiders committed to Carr by signing him on Wednesday to a three-year contract extension reportedly worth $121.5 million that runs through the 2025 season and, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo (h/t Nick Shook), includes a no-trade clause.

The Raiders confirmed the extension, and McDaniels addressed the news in that statement.

"Derek Carr has been the leader of this franchise for a long time and we are thrilled to continue that relationship moving forward," McDaniels said. "He has been a great example of someone who always puts the team first and we appreciate his desire to keep doing that while leading on and off the field. It is clear how much Derek cares about this organization, his teammates and winning. I look forward to the opportunity to work with him this season and beyond."

Interestingly, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports only $24.9 million of Carr's extension is fully guaranteed at signing, with another $40.4 million guaranteed for injury up "until the third day of the 2023 waiver period." This suggests the Raiders theoretically could part ways with Carr as soon as next year if he drastically underperforms in his first season playing under McDaniels and is healthy in March 2023.

While Aaron Rodgers and Deshaun Watson received gobs of guaranteed cash this offseason, it seems Carr will still have to "earn" similar paydays with his play on football fields.
