Patrick Mahomes explains how Taylor Swift helped grow KC Chiefs' international fanbase
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

This past season, the Kansas City Chiefs gained many new fans, and they can thank Taylor Swift for that. After the singer's relationship with Travis Kelce went public, Swifties across the globe were tuning into games, hoping to catch a glimpse of Swift.

However, as time went on, they also began to learn the game and when the Super Bowl rolled around, they had a whole new appreciation and understanding for football.

So after being featured on the cover of Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in 2024, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took a moment to appreciate Swift's impact on the Chiefs fanbase.

Mahomes started by explaining that the Chiefs “went from a nationwide team that was kind of global to a full global worldwide team. That came from Taylor’s fanbase.”

And it was something that Mahomes and the rest of the team enjoyed.

“We just embraced it,” he added . “We like having that visibility. At the end of the day, football has always been this bruising sport. We want to make it fun, where kids grow up and play football and show their personality and be who they are. This year really magnified that.”

Swift first showed up to Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs matchup against the Chicago Bears in Week 3. After Travis Kelce scored a touchdown, the cameras showed Swift jumping up and down, celebrating the moment. And because of that, it was the most watched NFL game that week on any network.

From there, viewership numbers continued to be impressive for all Chiefs games during the season. And when the Super Bowl rolled around, people from across the world were staying awake at all hours of the night just to catch a glimpse of the singer and see Kansas City take home the ultimate prize.

Throughout all of this, Swift has also become close friends with Mahomes' wife, Brittany. And because of that, the quarterback has gotten to know Swift much better.

He took a moment to sing her praises during his interview with Time.

“I’ve met a lot of famous people now in my life,” Mahomes said. “Taylor’s probably the most down-to-earth person that’s been on that stage for that long

“She’s never not working... Even when she’s taking her downtime, she’s working on something. Shooting a music video or singing a song or writing a song. You can see it by how she talks. Even when she’s talking about football, when she’s learning it, you can see her business mind putting it together. It’s almost like she’s trying to become a coach. ‘Why can’t you try this, this, and this?’ She’s asking the right questions.”

Swift clearly isn't going anywhere, so looks like the Chiefs will continue to get more fans. The Taylor Swift Effect is real.
