Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid blast refs following Chiefs loss to Bills

Things didn't go the way the Kansas City Chiefs wanted them to in the final two minutes of their 20-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

It looked like the Chiefs scored a go-ahead touchdown on a wild play in which quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a 25-yard pass to tight end Travis Kelce. Kelce then threw a backwards pass to receiver Kadarius Toney who ran in for a touchdown.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, the play was called back due to Toney being ruled offsides. Mahomes was visibly frustrated on the sidelines and had to be restrained from going after the officials.

After the game, Mahomes doubled down on his displeasure and sounded off on the officiating.

"It’s tough to swallow. Not only from me, and football in general, to take away greatness like that, for a guy like Travis to make a play like that, you want to see the guys on the field decide the game," Mahomes said, per ESPN's Jeff Darlington.

Head coach Andy Reid also blasted the officials.

“It's a bit embarrassing for the National Football League for that to take place," Reid said.

Reid went on to say that a team often gets a warning for a receiver being offsides during a game before a penalty on that infraction is called. Mahomes said the same. An unwritten rule in football? Yes, if one takes what Mahomes and Reid say at face value.

"To have a flag change the outcome of the game. I've never had offensive offsides called. If it does, they warn you. There wasn't a warning the entire game," Mahomes said. "And then you make a call like that in the final minute? Another game, we're talking about the refs. It's not what we want for the NFL. It's not what we want for football."

While it's true that nobody wants officials deciding the game in its biggest moments, it's hard not to recognize that a penalty occurred. If the penalty wasn't called and the Bills were to lose the game because of a non-call, it would be the Bills with the rightful gripe.

It's an unfortunate situation for the Chiefs as it was not only a go-ahead touchdown but one of the most exciting plays this season. Travis Kelce made magic happen but it was taken off the board and now it's just a moment that'll remain controversial.

The Chiefs loss drops them to 8-5 on the season and they'll look to bounce back next week against the 3-10 New England Patriots.
