Packers Have Already Defeated Bears Once This Offseason
Matt Krohn-USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers made minimal adjustments to their offensive coaching lineup, but they did introduce a couple of new faces, including one long-anticipated addition—a former player whose coaching potential had long been discussed. When Sean Mannion chose to retire and transition into an assistant coaching role, multiple teams showed interest, yet it was the Packers who secured his services once again, triumphing over the Chicago Bears in the process.

Head coach Matt LaFleur disclosed that he conducted virtual interviews with Mannion during the NFC Championship Game. Mannion’s role as an offensive assistant will primarily involve working with the quarterbacks, leveraging his wealth of playing experience and football acumen to benefit the team.

LaFleur spoke out about the Packers beating out the Bears for Mannion’s coaching services.

“They tried to get him. But I guess we had more to offer.”

The connection between LaFleur and Mannion spans back years, with LaFleur having previously collaborated with Mannion during the 2017 season when he served as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams. During this time, Mannion operated as the backup to quarterback Jared Goff.

The Packers’ offensive coaching ensemble is strategically assembled to nurture and refine quarterback talent. LaFleur’s own background as a former college and minor league quarterback, coupled with his prior experience as a quarterbacks coach with the Washington Commanders and Atlanta Falcons, underscores his expertise in this domain.

Additionally, the staff boasts the esteemed presence of Tom Clements, a legendary quarterbacks coach renowned for his work with iconic players like Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Assistant quarterbacks coach Connor Lewis brings a data-driven approach to player development, complementing the team’s coaching philosophy. With Mannion now joining the fold, the Packers further fortify their coaching arsenal with his valuable insights and contributions.

While Mannion’s NFL career may not have been illustrious in terms of game starts, his longevity in the league underscores his football intelligence and knack for supporting starting quarterbacks. As a trusted resource for teams like the Rams, Minnesota Vikings, and Seattle Seahawks, Mannion’s presence on the coaching staff adds depth and perspective.

Though Tom Clements remains a revered figure within the organization, his eventual retirement at the age of 70 necessitates a succession plan. With Mannion in the mix, the Packers possess a solid foundation for continuity and development in the quarterback coaching realm, ensuring a seamless transition when the time comes.

Even in this kind of a move, beating the Bears is always a good feeling.
