Omar Khan ‘really excited’ about Steelers’ quarterback room
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan is looking forward to seeing what the new quarterbacks do this fall. While appearing on The Pat McAfee Show this week, Khan was asked about his thoughts on what Russell Wilson, Justin Fields and Kyle Allen bring to the team.

“It’s been awesome,” Khan said. The team’s coming together. They’re gelling. Russ is an awesome person to have around here, same with Justin and Kyle. “I’m really excited about that quarterback room and what the future holds for us this year.”

Wilson, who spent the last two seasons with the Denver Broncos, signed a one-year contract with the Steelers in March. Fields was traded to the Steelers in March after spending three seasons with the Chicago Bears. Allen signed a one-year contract with the Steelers in April after playing for the Buffalo Bills last year. Wilson will enter the season as the starting quarterback, but the future at the position is not clear since Wilson and Allen signed one-year deals and Fields is likely entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Omar Khan didn’t expect to get Russell Wilson and Justin Fields

It made sense for the Steelers to go after Wilson since they were looking for an upgrade at the QB position. But the addition of Fields was a surprise considering he was the Bears’ starter for three years. In March, Khan spoke to reporters about adding Wilson and Fields to the rosters.

“I’m excited about both of those players,” Khan said, per the Steelers’ official website.  “They’re both really good quarterbacks. If you would have told me a month ago in Indy that we’d be here and Russell Wilson and Justin Fields would be our quarterbacks, I’d say, I’d be a little bit surprised.”

Khan also talked about meeting with Wilson after the Broncos announced they were going to release the Super Bowl champion quarterback. “Once the announcement was made that he was going to be released and Russell and his agent had permission to talk to other clubs, we had a conversation and Russ came in and met with us,” Khan said. “We had a great day, felt good about it. He’ll probably tell you the same thing, it was a match for both of us. We made it work.”

Last year, the Steelers had Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph as their quarterbacks. Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in March, Trubisky signed a two-year contract with the Buffalo Bills and Rudolph signed a one-year deal with the Tennessee Titans.
