Nick Foles turned down trade to the Eagles this offseason?

Bears quarterback Nick Foles is a man without a role right now. Chicago signed Andy Dalton to be its starting quarterback after opting to move off Mitchell Trubisky. The Bears then traded up for Ohio State’s Justin Fields in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

This pretty much means that the former Super Bowl MVP will be relegated to third-string duties should Fields impress during training camp.

It had previously led to rumors suggesting that the Bears were looking to trade Foles without any takers being found. According to this note from NFL insider Tyler Dunne, Chicago actually had a taker in Foles’ former Eagles team. The problem? Foles did not want to return to Philadelphia for a third stint.

“The Bears tried cleansing their hands of the Nick Foles mistake by trading Foles back to Philly,” Dunne reported on Tuesday. “Foles didn’t want to go, one source says, so the Eagles refused to trade for a QB who wouldn’t report.”

Ultimately for Foles, Philadelphia opted to sign veteran Joe Flacco to back up youngster Jalen Hurts under center. It’s interesting that Foles had no desire to head back to the Eagles. This is pretty much the only spot the 32-year-old signal caller has had success in his career.

Where does Foles go from here?

As one might imagine, the market for Foles’ services isn’t great at this point in the offseason. Set to count a mere $6.67 million against the cap in 2021, the veteran is likely nothing more than a backup right now.

Perhaps, a team with a young quarterback could come calling. The New York Jets don’t have any real experience behind rookie Zach Wilson. Foles could make sense as his backup.

The Cincinnati Bengals have Brandon Allen backing up former No. 1 pick Joe Burrow, who is coming off a torn ACL he suffered a season ago. Foles could act as insurance behind Burrow.

As it stands, Foles’ options are limited. There’s a chance that injuries during training camp could change things. But for now, he’s not looking at seeing the field much at all in 2021. That’s why it’s so surprising he turned down a reunion with the Eagles.
