NFL analyst views Detroit Lions as prime designation for star defensive back
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

As the NFL free agency period unfolds, the Detroit Lions have found themselves at the center of speculation surrounding veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

Initially, the idea of Gilmore joining the Lions seemed plausible, especially with the team’s acquisitions of Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson. However, when news broke of Cameron Sutton’s legal troubles and subsequent release by the Lions, the prospect of Gilmore donning the Honolulu Blue gained traction once again.

Despite Gilmore’s availability on the market, there has been minimal buzz regarding potential suitors for the seasoned cornerback. While Gilmore has expressed openness to returning to the New England Patriots, recent reports indicate his interest in reuniting with former high school and college teammate Jadeveon Clowney at the Carolina Panthers.

Approaching his 34th birthday, Gilmore remains a formidable presence on the field, harboring ambitions of securing another Super Bowl victory. However, the immediate championship prospects of both the Patriots and Panthers appear limited. Amidst this uncertainty, the Lions emerge as a promising landing spot for Gilmore.

Renowned analyst Brad Spielbeger of Pro Football Focus has consistently identified the Lions as a prime destination for Gilmore.

Similarly, Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report highlights Detroit as one of the top contenders for Gilmore’s services, citing the team’s potential fit and need for experienced cornerback talent.

“There are teams with a better shot at winning who have cap space and a need at corner. The Detroit Lions have money and are coming off an NFC championship run.”

While such lists serve as speculative insights rather than concrete developments, the momentum behind Gilmore’s potential move to Detroit continues to build. With each passing day of Gilmore’s availability, the financial feasibility of a Lions-Gilmore partnership becomes increasingly evident.

This would be a massive addition for the Detroit Lions’ defense. It’s something to keep a close eye on at the very least.
