New Seahawks’ Coach Gives Cryptic Answer On Geno Smith’s Future
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Seahawks have decided to keep quarterback Geno Smith after some speculation that they could cut him this offseason, but that does not mean his future in Seattle is set in stone.

New Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald was asked about Smith and backup signal-caller Drew Lock this week in terms of whether or not both guys will be with the team going forward.

Macdonald provided a rather cryptic, diplomatic answer.

“That’s a tough question, and it’s one that I probably can’t answer right now,” Macdonald told KCPQ Seattle’s Aaron Levine. “But we’re doing a lot of work on those guys. And I’ve had conversations just to get to know them. Understand who they are as people and their background, goals and what their family’s like and where they’re from. I didn’t know anything about them coming into this whole thing. So, right now we’re in the phase of figuring out who they are. Obviously, one or two, or both, would fit into our plans moving forward. But right now, probably don’t have that answer for you.”

Basically, Seattle doesn’t see much of a future with Smith under center beyond 2024.

That’s entirely understandable, considering that Smith is 33 years old and is coming off of a rather pedestrian 2023 campaign after dazzling two years ago.

This past season, Smith played in 15 games and threw for 3,624 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 64.7 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 92.1.

That came after a brilliant 2022 season in which he totaled 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 picks while completing a league-high 69.8 percent of his throws and registering a passer rating of 100.9. Smith won Comeback Player of the Year for his efforts.

To say that Smith was a late bloomer would be an understatement, as he went a full decade in the NFL before finally breaking out in 2022.

We’ll see how Geno Smith performs next season, but it doesn’t look like the Seahawks are factoring him into the long haul.

Seattle went 9-8 and missed the playoffs this past year.
