New Falcons TE Woerner Excited to Join Hometown Team

For new Atlanta Falcons tight end Charlie Woerner, signing with the team is more than just starting a new chapter of his NFL career.

The now-former San Francisco 49ers tight end hails from Georgia and played his college ball at the University of Georgia, still spending his time off in Athens. Not only that, but he claims he rarely left the state before beginning his NFL career on the other side of the country.

Naturally, joining his hometown team is a huge moment for Woerner and his family.

"Just excitement," Woerner said, per the Falcons official website. "(There's) excitement for me and my wife to get back closer to family, to play for the hometown team that I grew up cheering for and pulling for. Just very excited and very humbled to be back."

Woerner appeared in 68 of a possible 70 games in his four seasons with the 49ers. He played sparingly as a run-blocking tight end behind All-Pro George Kittle, but still played a notable role in the offense.

Additionally, Woerner brings significant playoff experience to Atlanta, having made the past three NFC Championships and Super Bowl LVIII with San Francisco. For a team trying to make the jump to the postseason, that kind of experience is invaluable.

"I think the team is just so ready to take off," Woerner said. "It's not such a full rebuild as you think with the new head coach. It seems like a refresh almost."
