New Cowboys OT Jason Peters takes Tyler Smith under his wing

Left tackle Jason Peters will add depth to the Cowboys offensive line, and mentor their first-round draft pick Tyler Smith.

Peters said in a Monday news conference that it will “(take) a couple of weeks,” for him to get ready, so Tyler Smith will start at left tackle this Sunday, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Peters showed Smith some of his techniques to prepare him for this matchup.

Smith said at a Monday news conference that Peters discussed,“Getting out of your stance quick and getting to your spot as being one of the most important parts of blocking, because from that point on, it's just a chess match between you and the defender.”

Pinpoint hands are a huge asset at the tackle position, because it slows down pass-rushers blitzing off the edge. Smith hasn’t lined up at tackle since he was in college, he played at left guard in the preseason and he’ll need to adjust to a change of pace.

Smith doesn’t lack strength, however. He was regularly mauling defensive lineman in the preseason and training camp. According to Pro Football Focus, Smith’s 92.1 grade was fourth among all tackles in college football last season.

Smith does need to refine his form in order to fill Tyron Smith’s void, Peters might be the right teacher.

He’s a Super Bowl champion and a nine-time Pro Bowler who wants to pass his knowledge to his young teammates.

“If Smith gets in there and starts rolling and they want to keep him (at left tackle), I'm going to just help him along,” Peters said.
