Morstead Tells Fans to 'Relax' after Jets Cut Veteran Punter

The New York Jets' initial 53-man roster does not include a punter. 

In a surprise move, Gang Green released 15th-year pro Thomas Morstead prior to Tuesday's 4:00 pm ET cutdown deadline.

As it turns out, however, Morstead won't be gone for long. Sources tell Jets Country that the team intends to re-sign the veteran punter after further roster adjustments are made. 

With Morstead being a vested veteran, he is not required to pass through waivers after being released. As a result, he is free to sign with any team, including the Jets. 

By temporarily cutting Morstead, the Jets will be able to use the spot to prevent another player from being subjected to waivers. After making the initial 53, said player will likely move to short-term IR.

Morstead is apparently on board with the Green & White's roster gymnastics. The former Super Bowl champion posted a message on the social media website formerly known as Twitter at 4:44 pm ET on Tuesday. 

Morstead's post read, "5 letters here,  just for everybody out there in Jets Land. R—E—L—A—X. Relax, we're gonna be OK."

Morstead, who spent the 2022 season with the Miami Dolphins, inked a free-agent deal with Gang Green in March.
