Marquise Brown Gets Honest On Why He Signed With Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs were in clear need of another offensive weapon, and they got it in wide receive Marquise Brown.

Brown was officially introduced as a member of the Chiefs on Monday, and during his first media session, he explained why he chose Kansas City in free agency.

“When the Chiefs are interested in you, it’s like, alright, you’ve got to take a look at that,” Brown said, via Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “Of course, I can go get some money at other places. But at the end of the day, it’s about winning. It’s about what I want. And I feel like everything just worked out the way it should.”

So, essentially, Brown left money on the table to sign with the Chiefs.

“It was other opportunities out there for sure. But I’m happy with the decision,” Brown said. “I’m happy where I’m at. And at the end of the day, I’m a kid that comes from nothing. So the amount of money I’ve made so far in my life is a blessing to me. But I’m a football player, you know? I want to play football, I want to win, I want to be part of a winner. And that’s why I’m here.”

It’s not too surprising given everything Brown had to endure the last couple of seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, where he struggled to forge a clear-cut role and was subject to a pair of losing campaigns.

Brown, who played his collegiate football at the University of Oklahoma, was originally selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the 25th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

He spent the first three seasons of his career with the Ravens, which included a 1,000-yard campaign in 2021. That ensuing offseason, he requested a trade due to dissatisfaction with his role. Baltimore obliged and sent him to the Cardinals, where his numbers took a nosedive.

This past year, Brown logged just 51 catches for 574 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games.

Chances are, the 26-year-old will see an uptick in production with Patrick Mahomes throwing him passes in Kansas City, even if he has to be the No. 2 receiver behind Rashee Rice.

We’ll see if Marquise Brown is able to deliver for the two-time defending champions in 2024.
