Marcus Spears: Steelers Should Bring In Elite Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

If there is one word to describe the Pittsburgh Steelers offense in 2023, that would be a mess. With the team going on their third quarterback of the season, an offensive line that continues to struggle, and wide receivers who act like divas, the Steelers offense looks like the laughingstock of the NFL. To make matters worse, they already had to get rid of Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada mid-season, which was something nobody expected them to do. Although the Steelers are still technically in the race to make the playoffs, this season seems to be done unless a miracle happens.

The Biggest Priority For The Steelers In The Offseason

With the season slowly winding down, free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft will be here before you know it. The biggest priority for the Steelers in the offseason should be to get themselves a top-tier offensive coordinator and look to revamp maybe some other jobs on the coaching staff as well. They should look to get someone with experience for once at the position, instead of hiring within like they normally do.

Looking back, the most exciting coaching pick-up that the Steelers made since making Mike Tomlin the head coach was bringing in Brian Flores for a year just to give him a job. Hopefully this year, they realize that it can be a good thing to reach out to someone outside of the organization to help coach and bring in new ideas. One name that was recently thrown around by ESPN analyst Marcus Spears was the Washington Commanders' current Offensive Coordinator, Eric Bieniemy. This of course would only happen if the Commanders were to clean the house and bring in all new coaches.

"If Eric Bienemy is out in Washington Because of new HC and He’s not the Guy to get it! The @steelers should be on the phone to acquire him for these young guys they have. If they grow up they are gonna be hell to deal with and I think he would be the OC for the Job. #challenge em," Spears posted via X.

Currently, Bieniemy has all the qualifications to be a head coach in the league. He is a two-time Super Bowl champion as a coach when he was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs and was a big part in developing the league's best quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. Even with the Commanders now, he's helped make Sam Howell into a solid quarterback as he has 3,568 passing yards and 19 touchdowns currently.

Even if the Commanders aren't willing to part ways with Bieniemy, the Steelers should still be looking for the next best option at offensive coordinator. There are a lot of exciting names who could be looking for an opportunity to prove themselves next year. One guy the Steelers should look into is the Miami Dolphins' current quarterbacks coach, Darrell Bevell. He's had a great amount of experience with being an interim head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions. Now, he's helping build the Dolphins and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa into a powerhouse in the NFL.

There are many other good candidates out there, but the Steelers should look to bring in another quarterback's coach that is not named Canada to revamp this offense and develop a quarterback for the team's future. Having someone like Bevell or Bieniemy with the experience that they have would possibly make the Steelers offense formidable again.

At the end of the day, you can bring in any offensive coordinator you want, but it will come down to what Tomlin wants to do. He ultimately has the main say in what goes on with the Steelers' offense and if he wants change, he will get it. This is why so many people were surprised when they decided to fire Canada as their offensive coordinator, because change like this rarely occurs in the Steelers organization.

So, what do you think, Steeler Nation? Do the Steelers even have a shot at getting Bieniemy?
