Longtime NFL tight end Nick Boyle trying out for Pittsburgh Steelers as long snapper

Nick Boyle spent eight seasons in the NFL as a tight end. He is now giving another position a try with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Boyle was invited to rookie minicamp to try out with the Steelers as a long snapper.

Pittsburgh announced its full roster for rookie minicamp Friday morning, which includes Boyle at long snapper.

While Boyle is now trying out with the Steelers, he started his career playing for Pittsburgh’s rival — the Baltimore Ravens.

The former Delaware star spent eight seasons with the Ravens. For his NFL career, Boyle has 121 catches for 1,049 yards and four touchdowns.

Last season, Boyle caught only one pass for two yards, while appearing in five games.

Boyle was drafted by the Ravens in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft, No. 171 overall. He has had a successful NFL career to this point and will look to continue it at a new position.

Players joining Boyle at Steelers rookie minicamp include Steelers 2023 draft picks Broderick Jones, Joey Porter Jr., Darnell Washington and others.

Boyle could end up joining a Steelers organization that is coming off of a 9-8 season.

Pittsburgh is coached by Mike Tomlin, who is entering his 17th season as the Steelers head coach. Tomlin has never had a losing season. He led the Steelers to a Super title in 2008.

One NFL analyst believes Steelers 2023 draft was just about perfect

As mentioned, Boyle will be joined at Steelers rookie camp by several members of the Pittsburgh draft class.

Josh Edwards of CBS Sports believes Pittsburgh landed an excellent group in the NFL draft.

He wrote: “Pittsburgh had a seven-player class, so what it was able to accomplish was more impressive than Miami, for example. The Steelers added quality players at positions of need. A few of their Day 3 selections — Wisconsin edge rusher Nick Herbig and Maryland offensive lineman Spencer Anderson — have positional flexibility so it is easier to find spots for them on the roster.” 

Edwards added that he does not believe any Steelers draft picks were a reach.

The Dolphins were the only other team with no players considered to be a reach.

Here is what Edwards wrote about Miami’s draft:

“Miami made just four selections so it could have gone very poorly or very well. Fortunately, it went very well in head coach Mike McDaniel’s second season. They took South Carolina cornerback Cam Smith in Round 2. Smith was high on my personal board. Texas A&M running back Devon Achane is a speedster and no coach is a better fit for his skill set than McDaniel. Stanford’s Elijah Higgins could grow into a tight end but will need to develop as a blocker in that scheme. Michigan’s Ryan Hayes is a player who has some positional flexibility.”
