Lions in contract talks with three-time Pro Bowl RB Todd Gurley?

Reports surfaced last week that three-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time First-team All-Pro running back Todd Gurley was visiting with the Detroit Lions and having a physical.

It appears that meeting went well.

Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, Detroit head coach Dan Campbell told reporters Thursday that the Lions are still discussing bringing Gurley back to town to sit third on the depth chart behind free-agent acquisition and presumed RB1 Jamaal Williams and 2020 rookie D'Andre Swift.

"We have interest in Todd, we do. We’re talking with he and his agent," Campbell explained. "But I would say this — just because we have interest in him, that does not affect our feeling and our thoughts on both [D’Andre] Swift and Jamaal [Williams]. It does not."

Simmons added that Campbell said there's no deadline to add the veteran ball-carrier but that the team would prefer to finalize an agreement as soon as possible assuming everyone involved is on the same page. Gurley entered the NFL back in 2015 and wouldn't miss much if he doesn't attend next week's mandatory minicamp sessions.

Gurley played alongside new Detroit quarterback Jared Goff when both were with the Los Angeles Rams until Gurley was released in March 2020. He spent last season with the Atlanta Falcons and averaged 3.5 yards per carry en route to finishing the campaign with a career-worst 678 rushing yards.
