Joe Namath believes Aaron Rodgers is capable of winning Jets a Super Bowl

New York Jets legendary quarterback Joe Namath was already a fan of Aaron Rodgers and his abilities as a future Hall of Fame quarterback. So much so that he had offered to let the former Green Bay Packers great wear his retired No. 12 upon his trade to the Jets.

Rodgers declined that generous offer and will instead wear No. 8. Namath felt that showed a ton about Rodgers' character. Speaking of, Namath made it clear that he feels Rodgers is exactly the guy the Jets need to finally win the Super Bowl.

"Oh, I know he could," Namath told ESPN when asked if he believes Rodgers can win the Jets a Super Bowl. "Yes, he's capable, absolutely. He can pick that team up. He's one of the best players -- one of the greatest players -- I've ever seen in my life.

"I've watched him play. I'm a football fan. I've watched him play for the Packers, boy, and I marvel at him. I mean, year in and year out, he continues to make plays."

The last and only time the Jets won it all was Super Bowl III in January of 1969. The quarterback in that game? You guessed it. It was Namath, who famously had guaranteed his team's victory.

The Jets beat the Baltimore Colts, 16-7, in that contest. Namath completed 17 of 28 passes for 206 yards.

Like Namath, Rodgers is also a one-time Super Bowl winner. He led the Packers on a legendary playoff run as the first six-seed to come out of the NFC to compete in the Super Bowl. His Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-25, in Super Bowl XLV. Rodgers completed 24 of 39 passes for 334 yards and three touchdowns and was named the game's MVP.

It's worth noting that Namath stopped just short of guaranteeing Rodgers will win a Super Bowl in New York, but he sure does seem confident the four-time MVP can get it done.
