Jets’ Garrett Wilson leaves Week 18 game vs. Patriots after late hit to head by Jabrill Peppers
Scott Galvin-USA TODAY Sports

Garrett Wilson left the New York Jets’ Week 18 game against the New England Patriots with an apparent head injury in the third quarter.

The stud wide receiver was hit in the head by Patriots linebacker Jabrill Peppers on an incomplete pass thrown by Jets quarterback Trevor Siemian. Peppers hit Wilson with his chest well after the incompletion and was assessed a 15-yard penalty.

Peppers immediately let the Jets know he accidentally hit Wilson, perhaps because he couldn’t stop when running full speed in slick conditions. There was heavy snowfall Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

Wilson took off his helmet and lay down on the field after the hit. Peppers appeared to let Wilson know he was sorry for what happened.

After a brief visit to the medical tent on the sideline, Wilson walked under his own power to the locker room.

Tough end to strong Garrett Wilson season

At the time of the injury, Wilson had two catches for 34 yards. That gives him 95 receptions on the season, second-most in Jets history behind Brandon Marshall, who caught 109 passes in 2015.

Wilson surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the second straight season in Week 17. He’s the first Jets receiver with consecutive 1,000-yard seasons since Keyshawn Johnson in 1998-99.

Rookie center Joe Tippmann also left the game with an apparent injury for the Jets in the third quarter.

In a tight defensive game in difficult playing conditions, the Jets carried a 6-3 lead into the fourth quarter against the Patriots. The Jets are looking to end a 15-game losing streak against the Patriots.
