Jets Announce Two Roster Moves on Defensive Line
Robert Scheer/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK

The New York Jets did not hold a practice on Monday, but there was still notable activity in Florham Park.

Gang Green announced two roster moves at the end of the business day, both coming on the defensive line.

The team signed defensive end Jalyn Holmes while simultaneously placing defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo on Injured Reserve. Odenigbo joined the Jets on July 21, but was inactive for Saturday's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

Holmes comes to the Green & White after the Chicago Bears cut him on August 4 to make room for their signing of Yannick Ngakoue. The defensive lineman appeared in only one game for Chicago last year.

Originally a fourth-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2018, Holmes has made 34 career NFL regular season appearances. He earned nine starts with the Vikings in 2020.

The 27-year-old Holmes has totaled 60 tackles, three pass deflections and 1.0 sack as a pro. He joins what is arguably the Jets' most-talented position group. Even with first teamers on the sidelines, Gang Green's pass rush accounted for five sacks against the Carolina.

Looking at ways to reinforce the offensive tackle position, the Jets reportedly worked out a pair of bookends on Monday. According to Aaron Wilson, veteran tackles Zach Banner and Ty Nsekhe were brought in for a look.

The 6-foot-8 Banner did not play in the league last year after being released by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has played in 30 career games since 2017.

The 37-year-old Nsekhe has played in at least 10 games each of the past eight seasons. After spending 2019 and 2020 playing 25 games for the Buffalo Bills, the Texas State product landed with the Dallas Cowboys for the 2021 season and made 10 appearances for the Los Angeles Rams last year.

Wilson also reported that Quinton Bell participated in the workout with Holmes, Banner and Nsekhe.

The Jets return to practice on Tuesday, August 15 in Florham Park. On Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will join them for a joint training camp session ahead of Saturday's preseason game at MetLife Stadium.
