Jaguars' Urban Meyer: 'It had to be perfect' for me to coach again

It appears new Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer thinks the situation in Jacksonville is "perfect." With the No. 1 overall pick and a boatload of cap space, Meyer intends to turn the Jaguars into a contender.

In a video posted to the Jaguars website, Meyer discussed his decision to accept the team's head-coaching job, saying he "heard this is the best job available."

"It had to be perfect," Meyer said, as transcribed by Pro Football Talk. "This was not a knee jerk reaction. This is something I've been studying for a long time. Not necessarily this job, but just the NFL. The opportunity presented itself and whether it's watching film, studying the roster, understanding the salary cap, understanding what we have available to us with the No. 1 pick, the fact that I love Jacksonville . . . Duval and 904 deserve a chance to go win."

Meyer also said that he'll be looking to hire "an elite coaching staff" and that will be his focus in the first few days as head coach.

The Los Angeles Chargers also reportedly spoke to Meyer about their vacant head-coaching position, but Jacksonville's opportunity was too good to turn down.

Meyer found tremendous success while coaching the Florida Gators and, more recently, the Ohio State Buckeyes. In seven seasons at Ohio State from 2012-18, Meyer went 83-9, winning the College Football Championship in 2014.
