Insider links Jets' Denzel Mims to Cowboys following trade request

The agent for New York Jets wide receiver Denzel Mims confirmed ahead of this past weekend that the 24-year-old was requesting a trade coming off a season that he finished with a paltry eight catches for 133 yards and zero touchdowns across 11 games.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh later told reporters that he was not yet prepared to say that Mims' time with the organization was "over," and the 2020 second-round draft selection remained on the team's initial 53-man roster through Tuesday's last round of preseason cuts. According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Saleh remarked on Tuesday that Mims is "frustrated" he's still with the Jets but certainly isn't a "hostage."

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys traded star wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns in March and, in the eyes of some fans, never adequately replaced him as Michael Gallup continued his recovery from the torn ACL he suffered in early January. For a piece published Wednesday morning, ESPN's Dan Graziano linked the Cowboys with a potential move for Mims.

"The Cowboys sound optimistic about an early return from injury for Michael Gallup and about the promise of rookie Jalen Tolbert behind top receiver CeeDee Lamb," Graziano wrote. "But with James Washington out with a broken foot and legit questions around Gallup and Tolbert until we see what they can do on the field, Dallas would do well to poke around.

"Players such as Denzel Mims could be available here in the coming days and pique the Cowboys' interest."

Expectations for Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott are as high as ever throughout the football community, so owner Jerry Jones may be more willing to explore a trade for an unproven commodity such as Mims than in previous Septembers. Meanwhile, K.D. Drummond of Cowboys Wire/USA Today pointed out on Tuesday that Gallup passed his physical and could return to the lineup at some point next month.

Gallup isn't expected to play in the Week 1 matchup versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 11.
