Harrison Butker can make Super Bowl history with just a few kicks

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has a chance to make history during Super Bowl LVIII with just a few kicks.

Butker is super close to two huge kicking records held by some of the greatest kickers of all time.

Record 1: Total field goals made in Super Bowls

Stephen Gostkowski (New England Patriots) and Adam Vinatieri (Patriots, Indianapolis Colts) are tied for the most field goals made in Super Bowl games with seven each. Gostkowski achieved this record in six Super Bowls, while Vinatieri did it in five.

Butker, meanwhile has five field goals made across three Super Bowls. That means Butker needs just three more field goals in the Super Bowl to pass up those two kickers for first place, and he has a chance to do it in fewer games, too.

Record 2: Total extra points made in Super Bowls

Vinatieri is the sole record-holder for total extra points made in Super Bowl games with 13. Butker, meanwhile has nine, meaning he needs just five more to take sole possession of that record.

Can Butker beat those records?

Butker has made three or more field goals in five of 20 games this year, but has hit five or more extra points in just one game this year. So, clearly, the field goal record is the easier one to accomplish, though both are ultimately attainable for Butker. He has had the best season of his career in 2023-24, missing just two field goals and zero extra points all year long.

The fact that Butker is even close to these records shows how consistently great both he and the Chiefs have been. In fact, it may not be long before Butker passes up Gostkowski and Vinatieri in overall postseason field goals and extra points.

Vinatieri holds the record for most postseason FGs with 56, while Gostkowski leads in postseason XPs with 89. Butker has 28 and 61, respectively, with a chance to add more this Sunday. If Butker and the Chiefs continue to play at a high level for five to six more seasons, Butker surely has a chance to reach those numbers.
