Giants' Davis Webb: Daniel Jones is 'probably the smartest quarterback I've been around'

The 2022 NFL season will undeniably be a make-or-break campaign for New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones after his employer declined the fifth-year option attached to his rookie contract earlier this spring.

One person who has gotten a good look at Jones in organized team activities since that decision is fellow signal-caller Davis Webb. Webb first entered the league when the Giants selected him in the third round of the 2017 draft and most recently served as a backup option with the Buffalo Bills until Big Blue brought him back in February.

Webb was a college teammate of Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes and has shared NFL rosters with Giants legend Eli Manning and Josh Allen of the Bills. On Thursday, the 27-year-old explained why he believes those experiences allow him to declare nobody should give up on Jones quite yet.

"He’s the hardest-working quarterback I’ve been around," Webb remarked, according to Ryan Morik of SNY. "He’s probably the smartest quarterback I’ve been around.

"He has really good questions in meetings, takes really good notes, he’s always looking to improve, weight room, practice field, meeting room, he’s just all in, and it’s fun to have a teammate like that. Cares that much and brings the most out of his teammates."

Webb added that he's convinced Jones is "gonna have his best year" playing under new Giants head coach and former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

Daboll is trying to get Jones to loosen up in workouts and insisted last week that "it's OK" for Jones "to make a mistake in practice." Jones' problem in that department is he recorded 29 interceptions and 20 lost fumbles over his first three pro seasons. An inability to eliminate such turnovers will inevitably cause Daboll and company to search for an upgrade at the sport's most important position next year.
