Free agents the Lions should target before the season begins

The Detroit Lions are the favorite to win the NFC North this season, but it's worth noting that they could benefit from some experienced players at certain positions. Here are some free agents that could help the Lions win their division in 2023.

C Ben Jones

Jones spent the last seven years playing for the Tennessee Titans. The veteran offensive lineman can provide experienced depth at the center position. Pro-Bowl C Frank Ragnow announced at a charity event this spring that his injured toe was "inoperable" and he would have to play through the pain again this season.

During the 2021 season, Detroit's backup center Evan Brown joined the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent. Brown performed admirably in place of Ragnow, who was out for most of the season due to the same toe injury. The 26-year-old offensive lineman stepped in as a guard for Halapoulivaati Vaitai, who was sidelined with a back injury for the entire 2022 season.

Detroit signed veteran G Graham Glasgow this offseason to back up Vaitai. At 34, Jones would add solid veteran depth at the center position for Detroit without breaking the bank.

G Trai Turner

It may be a bit of a stretch for Turner to join the team, considering Vaitai's return from a back injury and the Glasgow signing. However, Turner would be a significant upgrade over the current veteran guards on the roster. Despite missing seven games in 2020 due to a groin injury as a member of the LA Chargers, Turner boasts an impressive track record as a five-time Pro Bowl guard in Carolina.

In 2022, Turner played for the Washington Commanders in the nation's capital. If Vaitai and Glasgow cannot avoid injuries during training camp, the Lions may consider Turner a viable option, assuming he is still available in the open market.

QB Teddy Bridgewater

In April, reports were linking Bridgewater to a contract offer from the Lions. However, the team's Offensive Coordinator, Ben Johnson, has since expressed satisfaction with the current backup quarterback situation. It's worth noting that the Lions' quarterback room, aside from Jared Goff, lacks significant experience.

Teddy "Two Gloves" Bridgewater has an impressive record as a starter in the NFL, having started 65 games going 33-32. He has accumulated 15,120 career passing yards and 75 touchdowns while only throwing 47 interceptions. Bridgewater is a highly respected quarterback in the league and would be a valuable addition to the Lions' quarterback room.

The current backup to Goff on the Lions team is Nate Sudfeld, who has only thrown 37 career passes since joining the league in 2017. Bringing Bridgewater onto the team would add credibility to the quarterback room and provide insurance in case Goff gets injured.
