Fred Warner: Brock Purdy can lead 49ers to Super Bowl title

Linebacker Fred Warner believes the San Francisco 49ers can win Super Bowl LVII with rookie Brock Purdy serving as their starting quarterback.

"Yes. Yes, I do," Warner answered when asked Monday by Rich Eisen if he thinks Purdy can guide the club to a championship, per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. Warner was speaking one day after starter Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a season-ending broken left foot during Sunday's 33-17 win over the Miami Dolphins. San Francisco lost first-choice signal-caller Trey Lance to a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2.

The 49ers made Purdy the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft but later signed Garoppolo to a restructured contract in August to hold onto him as a backup for Lance. Purdy completed 25-of-37 passes for 210 yards with two touchdowns and an interception against the Dolphins and reportedly will be San Francisco's QB1 moving forward even though Baker Mayfield was waived by the Carolina Panthers on Monday.

"It's such an unlikely story to have 'Mr. Irrelevant' come in, lead the Niners to a Super Bowl," Warner told Eisen. "I think that's what everybody's going to write us off on, and that's fine. If that's what everyone wants the narrative to be, I'm completely fine with that. I'm so completely laser-focused, just like I know the team is, on taking this thing one week at a time.

"Our goal, ultimately, is the Super Bowl. We want to win that Super Bowl so badly."

It's unclear if the 49ers intend on attempting to land Mayfield, who asked for his release after he lost his starting job and spot on the depth chart in Carolina. On Sunday night, it was reported that the 49ers were signing veteran backup Josh Johnson.

Purdy will start for the 8-4 49ers against the 5-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers this coming Sunday after Tampa Bay faces the 4-8 New Orleans Saints Monday night.
