Former Steelers' Linebacker Vince Williams Believes Kendrick Green Would Be 'Ridiculously Good' At Wild New Position
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman, Kendrick Green may be on his way out of town after just two seasons. The Illinois product was picked in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft and then thrown right into the fire. He started 15 games at center in his rookie campaign, which came with a lot of lows. Fast forward to 2022, and he didn't see the field after making a move to left guard.

Kevin Dotson beat Green out for the starting job, and he stayed healthy throughout the season. After left guards Isaac Seumalo and Nate Herbig were signed this offseason, it seems likely that the team will move on from Green. One former Steelers player, Vince Williams, has an idea that could help Green's chances of sticking around.

At the 2021 NFL Scouting Combine, Green tested pretty well athletically. His broad and vertical jumps, along with 40-yard dash, were all considered elite for his position. Unfortunately, his short arms and overall lack of size were a major concern heading into the league. That has held true thus far in the NFL, but perhaps Williams is onto something.

Based off those numbers, it seems he could be athletic enough. The Steelers official website has Green listed at 315 pounds, so he would obviously have to lose some weight. For comparison, Derek Watt is listed at 234 pounds. Watt remains a free agent and is unlikely to return at this point. After the selection of tight end Darnell Washington in the 2023 NFL Draft, the team seemingly plans to use Connor Heyward as its fullback.

While that could be lethal in the passing game, Heyward may not have the blocking abilities to be a full-time fullback. Williams had quite the praise for Green in calling him a "bigger Roosevelt Nix." Nix played five seasons from 2015-2019 with Pittsburgh, including a Pro Bowl appearance in 2017. He was crucial to the team's success on the ground for a few of those years, consistently opening up holes for star running back Le'Veon Bell. Williams doesn't just think Green should move to fullback, he thinks the offensive lineman would be "great" at the discussed position.

Williams spent eight seasons with the team as an inside linebacker. He started 71 games in that span, which included two separate playoff game starts. The 2013 sixth-rounder became a fan favorite in the meantime through his pure honesty and constant energy. Over the years, he has continued to share his opinion on the Steelers through Twitter. Comparing Green to Roosevelt Nix is quite the compliment, but it seems unlikely the team will consider this at all.

Should Steelers actually consider this move?

Green has shown an ability to switch positions throughout his football career, as he played defensive tackle throughout high school. That led to him being recruited as just that in college, as he redshirted as a DT in 2017 at the University of Illinois. In 2018, he was moved to left guard, where he started all 12 games. By 2020, he was a full-time center. Now, fullback is a whole new idea, but Green is athletic enough to have that kind of position versatility.
