Former Steelers LB Vince Williams Clearly Upset Team Did Not Win Super Bowl During 'Killer B's' Era
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most respected and storied franchises in all of professional sports. The organization has a record six Super Bowl wins (tied with the New England Patriots), as well as dozens of Hall of Fame players with more to be inducted within the next five seasons. Despite the strong history, fans have become anxious ever since a Super Bowl loss to the Green Bay Packers at the end of the 2010 season. Head Coach Mike Tomlin has had undeniably talented rosters since then, but not much has materialized as his groups have only combined for three playoff wins since.

The specific stretch of seasons spanned from 2013 to 2017 for Steelers fans. Pittsburgh had a dynamic offense led by Ben Roethlisberger, Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown. Shockingly, the trio only played in four total playoff games together. The best result was a trip to the AFC Championship Game towards the end of the 2016 season that ended with an embarrassing 36-17 loss to the Patriots.

Vince Williams, who played linebacker for Pittsburgh from 2013 to 2020, played on those teams that failed to take advantage of Roethlisberger's prime years. He responded on X (formerly known as Twitter) to a post about The Killer B's and how it was a shame that they never were able to celebrate a Super Bowl together. Williams expressed his displeasure.

It's pretty astounding to look back at an organization that was 45-19 from 2014 to 2017. Granted, Bell missed the playoffs in back to back years in 2014 and 2015 due to injuries, but it was a disappointment to fans when four straight strong regular seasons were wasted by poor performances in the playoffs. Tomlin has been under heavy fire dating back to those years for not coming up with another Super Bowl appearance.

When Roethlisberger, Brown and Bell were at their very best, the Steelers offense seemed almost unstoppable. The offensive line was looked at as one of the most elite units in the NFL at the time with Maurkice Pouncey and David DeCastro leading the way. Williams acknowledging how upsetting it was to not win a championship during this timeframe pretty much sums up how all of Steeler Nation felt.

Every year with the trio brought optimism. Then, Bell held out for a contract that Pittsburgh wouldn't give him and Brown became way more of a problem in the locker room than anyone could have ever expected. By the time the 2019 rolled around, Roethlisberger was the last one standing and the organization quickly began to have serious issues on offense, despite the future Hall of Fame quarterback's prowess.

One of the most insane year's of the group's time in Pittsburgh was 2014. Roethlisberger had 4,952 passing yards and 32 passing touchdowns compared to only nine interceptions. Brown was on the receiving end of 129 catches that went for 1,698 yards and 13 touchdowns. On top of that, Bell carried the pigskin 290 times for 1,290 yards and had a total of 11 scores. The three were lighting up any defense that crossed their path.

The Steelers Have Lacked Offensive Identity Since The Killer B's Broke Up

There was a time where several fans across the league were convinced that the three players would hoist several Lombardi Trophies together and that all would be on their ways to the Hall of Fame one day. Once Roethlisberger was left by himself from 2019 onward, Bell's career quickly fizzled and Brown, despite winning a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is looked at in present day as insane and a serious victim of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) ever since he took a brutal hit from Vontaze Burfict in the 2015 season's playoffs.

Steelers fans were spoiled when these three play-makers were on the field together. Now, in 2023, the team doesn't even seem to want to throw the ball over the middle. It has been a frustrating time that has the fan base wishing they could rewind the clock to when putting 30 points on the board was more of a regularity rather than an anomaly.
