Former No. 6 overall pick named 'cut candidate' for Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks must clear up some cap space as they are about $4.4M over the salary cap heading into 2024. Pro Football Focus believes they could cut the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft as a result.

PFF's Brad Spielberger named veteran safety Jamal Adams a "cut candidate" after back-to-back injury-riddled seasons.

"The writing seems on the wall here dating back to last offseason after the signing of safety Julian Love in free agency and the use of the No. 5 overall pick on defensive back Devon Witherspoon," Spielberger writes. "Seattle collectively added the components of Jamal Adams' contributions, and he was subsequently phased out of the lineup a bit."

In 2020, Seattle traded two first-round picks, a third-round pick and safety Bradley McDougald to the New York Jets for Adams and a fourth-round pick. And then the team proceeded to make him the highest paid safety in NFL history at the time.

It's safe to say it hasn't worked out. Adams has played in just 10 games the past two seasons due to injuries, posting just 51 tackles and three passes defensed in the span.

If the Seahawks do move on from the 28-year-old this offseason, it will likely come post June 1 as they will save $16.5M in cap space while taking a $10.4M dead cap hit.

It would be worth it to have some salary cap breathing room and move on from a player that has not reached the expectations that Seattle had for him when it traded for him.

The three-time Pro Bowler will still likely have some teams interested in him with the hope he can finally get and stay healthy.

But as for the Seahawks, Spielberger believes they have finally come to terms that they made a mistake and are ready to move on from Adams heading into 2024.
