Former No. 1 overall pick David Carr: Giants could 'make a move' for Jimmy Garoppolo

The San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants have different questions hovering over them regarding their quarterback situations this summer.

San Francisco seems prepared to go all-in on 2021 rookie Trey Lance as its new starting signal-caller even though veteran Jimmy Garoppolo is still on the roster. The Giants, meanwhile, hit a figurative reset button this past winter and ultimately hired former Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen as their new general manager. Schoen then chose former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to be his head coach, and such decisions caused the Giants to be linked with former Buffalo backup Mitchell Trubisky in offseason rumors.

Trubisky signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in March, and the Giants then went on to decline the fifth-year option attached to the contract of current QB1 Daniel Jones. With Jones now in the final year of his deal, former pro quarterback David Carr explained during a recent NFL Network appearance why he believes the Giants could target Garoppolo at some point in the near future.

"You're coming in, you're a fresh new head coach (Brian Daboll), you don't know if Daniel is the guy," Carr explained during the segment, per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. "You didn't draft him. You didn't bring him in there. You just kind of ... have to use him. So I thought they would make a move for [Trubisky]. They didn't."

Carr echoed comments made by others and suggested the 49ers will have to play Garoppolo during the preseason so he can show he's fully recovered from his March shoulder surgery.

"Now with Jimmy, I think the issue is his shoulder," Carr remarked. "No one really knows. I think what teams are going to do is they're going to wait until the first or second preseason game, if Jimmy gets [into those games] in San Francisco, and just kind of see. Does he look healthy?

"And then I think that's when you might see the Giants make a move, or another team make a move for Jimmy, because Jimmy G can win some games for somebody. He absolutely still can play at a high level. He won a lot of games in San Francisco. I think the only issue is just his health. If he's healthy, then very possibly the Giants could make a move for him."

Jones has a lengthy injury history and spent time during springtime workouts learning to "go down earlier" to try to avoid physical setbacks. If, however, he's banged up at some point in September and/or October, the Giants theoretically could consider taking a flier on Garoppolo as long as the 30-year-old is available at a decent price.
