Former Jets player blasts Zach Wilson after win over Giants

Former New York Jets offensive lineman Willie Colon was left unimpressed after quarterback Zach Wilson guided the club to an ugly 13-10 overtime win over the New York Giants on Sunday afternoon. 

"I’m not even mad at Zach Wilson anymore," Colon said during the SNY postgame show, per Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "I’m mad at coach [Robert] Saleh. I’m mad at that whole building, because time after time, they’ve forced down our throats that Zach Wilson is the future for the New York Jets. Because of what he does in practice is good enough for what he does on the field. You cannot watch that tape and say that right now." 

Wilson completed 17-of-36 pass attempts for 240 yards with a touchdown (created by running back Breece Hall) and no interceptions in a rain-soaked game against the Giants. As Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk pointed out, though, Wilson also delivered clutch throws late in regulation to put the Jets in place to secure a game-tying field goal. The 24-year-old then drew a pass interference penalty in overtime that ultimately allowed the visitors to convert a walk-off kick. 

Nevertheless, Colon thinks the Jets need better than the third-year pro currently serving as a replacement for the injured Aaron Rodgers. 

"It is an embarrassment," Colon continued. "It is not cute anymore. It is beyond cute. You ask your third-string offensive line to fight tooth and nails and we only got one first down, in which he ran for." 

For a piece published Sunday night, ESPN's Dan Graziano argued that the Jets should call the Tennessee Titans about the availability of veteran signal-caller Ryan Tannehill before Tuesday's trade deadline. Colon seems to agree with such takes. 

"If me and Bart [Scott] played like that, we wouldn’t have a job," Colon added about Wilson. "We wouldn’t be in the NFL. We wouldn’t be on this table. We wouldn’t be worthy of talking about football." 

According to ESPN stats, Wilson began Monday ranked 29th in the NFL among qualified players with a 36.8 adjusted QBR and 30th with a 74.3 passer rating. He tossed five touchdown passes and five interceptions across the Jets' first seven games. 

The 4-3 Jets host the 3-4 Los Angeles Chargers next Monday night. Wilson likely will start that game, but one wonders if the Jets will have somebody such as Tannehill learning the offense just in case the club feels it needs an upgrade at the position at some point in November.
