Former Giants first-round pick 'definitely eyeing' reunion with team

With only two more weeks of preseason action remaining, teams have already begun rushing to sign available veterans on the open market to solidify their 53-man rosters.

After being cleared to practice following last season's ACL tear, veteran guard Justin Pugh expects to secure a contract soon. In an ideal world, he'd return to where his career began.

During an appearance on the "Talkin' Ball" podcast, Pugh, who spent the last five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, outlined his free-agency approach with the New York Daily News' Pat Leonard. The 33-year-old intends to join a contender and when asked if the New York Giants, the team that selected him 19th overall in 2013, could be an option, Pugh admitted they're on his radar.

“100 percent," Pugh said. "I mean, the Giants are one of those teams that I am definitely eyeing. There’s no denying that. I’ve mentioned it on Twitter before. It’s where I started my career. I would love to finish it there.”

"But they also have things in their organization that they had to get figured out," Pugh continued. "They had a lot of contracts this offseason that they had to get squared away ... So, we still have a ways to go and how that shakes out, but I do love my New York Giants. I’m still a big supporter. I watch from afar.”

While Pugh didn't mention that the Giants had inquired about his services, he revealed that he had held conversations with six teams and anticipates hearing from more once the preseason wraps up. In the meantime, Pugh will train with former offensive lineman LeCharles Bentley, a two-time Pro Bowler with the New Orleans Saints, as he awaits his next opportunity, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

New York is still doing its due diligence on the remaining free agents available and as teams continue cutting players, the front office will surely explore the market further. Last season, New York's offensive line struggled in pass protection, as evidenced by the unit's 82.8 Pro Football Focus pass-blocking efficiency grade, which ranked 27th in the league.

On Wednesday, the Giants signed veteran offensive tackle Julién Davenport, whose last regular season appearance came with the Indianapolis Colts during the 2021 season, but adding another guard would make sense. They lost a starter in Nick Gates during free agency and RG Mark Glowinski allowed a career-high five sacks last season.

If GM Joe Schoen feels Pugh is capable of making some impact, the possibility of a reunion shouldn't be ruled out.
