Former Cardinals QB Kurt Warner Defends Josh Allen Against Critics
Jamie Germano/Rochester Democrat and Chronicle / USA TODAY NETWORK

Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner knows what it's like to win - and lose - some of the biggest games in professional football.

Whether by way of the Cardinals or St. Louis Rams, Warner had his fair share of shortcomings just as often as his successes - though it's tough to gripe about a total of three Super Bowl appearances and one ring to tout.

Since his playing days ended, Warner's transitioned to an analytical role by evaluating current quarterbacks and their play throughout the season - especially on social media.

Typically putting out film study and general opinion tweets, Warner decided this week to step to the podium for Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who's considered to be one of the best quarterbacks in the league but has failed to advance to a Super Bowl in his time as a starter:

"I’ve been thinking a lot about this whole @JoshAllenQB debate - and I know winning means something - but so does context!" said Warner on Twitter/X.

"Here’s a little - I played in 3 SBs - in each of them after the last significant drive we had on offense, I left the field with a lead or tie… I have a SB record of 1-2… Imagine me not having to throw another pass in any of those games and being undefeated (2-0-1 - obviously would have played overtime & could have been 3-0)… how would my career be viewed differently??? Without doing anything different!

"Context matters, although very seldom really considered… but can’t always be just as easy as he wasn’t good enough to win! Josh Allen has been great in playoffs - many times not needing to do anything else to win or tie in those games (and often times it’s been to best QB of the era as well) yet many want to say he hasn’t been good enough… maybe, maybe not, but context matters!"

This followed a tweet a few days prior:

"Why can’t we just say the reason #JoshAllen didn’t win (I know it’s a team but so much about QB) game isnt bc he wasn’t really good, but simply bc the guy on the other was better!!! Period… sometimes to win those games you have to almost play flawless & that’s nearly impossible!" said Warner.

The Cardinals haven't been back to the Super Bowl after Warner led them nearly all the way in 2010, though the Pittsburgh Steelers had other ideas.

Buffalo again fell victim to the Kansas City Chiefs in the postseason this past weekend despite having homefield advantage.
