Former Buccaneers Running Back Announces Retirement from NFL

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are retooling their backfield after finishing last in the league in rushing last season. That's led the team to release veteran running back Leonard Fournette while bringing in Chase Edmonds, who has recently spent time with the Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins.

Outside of Fournette, Tampa Bay's backfield featured rookie Rachaad White, Ke'Shawn Vaughn, and Giovani Bernard. There will be at least one more player who won't return to the franchise in 2023 as Bernard announced his retirement from the NFL on Friday after ten seasons at the professional. He spent his first eight years with the Cincinnati Bengals prior to playing a pair of seasons with the Buccaneers.

Bernard announced the news with an emotional statement on social media.

"10 years ago, I came into this league grateful. Grateful for what God has done for me to get to that moment and to celebrate all the obstacles that were overcome. And now fast forward 10 years, I leave humbled. Humbled by the experiences, relationships, and memories that have shaped me during this time. I've had the privilege of crossing paths with exceptional men and women, including my brothers on the field, coaches who've taught me so much, and front office/staff who worked behind the scenes to make it all seamless. I offer my deepest thanks to you all. You've allowed me and my family to be a part of something truly special. We are forever grateful and feel truly blessed that this was part of our journey. As I look forward, I’m excited for the newness ahead. New challenges to face and new adventures to take. What a ride it’s been, but what a ride is to come. Thankful for you all. Much love!"

The Florida native was originally selected by the Bengals in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie team after rushing 170 times for 695 yards and five touchdowns on the ground while catching 56 passes for 514 yards and three more scores. Bernard proved to be a reliable gadget option in Cincinnati. He rushed 921 times for 3,697 yards and 22 touchdowns while catching 342 passes for 2,867 yards and 11 more scores.

Bernard's role diminished over the past two seasons after signing with the Buccaneers to play alongside Tom Brady.  He totaled 16 rushes for 86 yards and 25 catches for 122 yards and three touchdowns while in pewter and red. His most memorable moment with the franchise came this past season after Bernard muffed a fake punt in a defeat to his former team. He had a tense discussion with the media in the locker room after the game while being questioned about the play.

Ahead of the conclusion of the NFL Draft, the Buccaneers have Rachaad White, Ke'Shawn Vaughn, Chase Edmonds, and Patrick Laird under contract in the backfield.
