Falcons cut USFL Defensive Player of the Year and waive UDFA
John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

The Falcons are beginning to trim their roster, already waiving fullback Clint Ratkovich.  A pair of fringe players are joining him too. Aaron Wilson reports the Falcons are cutting former USFL Defensive Player of the Year linebacker Frank Ginda and waiving undrafted free agent running back Carlos Washington, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter.

Washington showed to be a versatile running back, able to contribute in the three facets — runner, receiver, and blocker. However, he probably left a bit to be desired as a pure runner. It also didn’t help he coughed up a costly fumble in the Falcons’ final preseason contest. A practice squad spot is still on the table for him, though.

Frank Ginda had an incredibly short stint in Atlanta, but it was clear from the get-go that he had an uphill battle to making the final 53-man roster. He was squarely behind Mike Jones Jr., who is on the outside looking in behind Nate Landman and Tae Davis. The LSU and Clemson product is a practice squad candidate, which means Ginda’s time in Atlanta is likely over.

The Falcons will continue to make cuts as the 4 p.m. deadline approaches.
