ESPN predicts where Jacoby Brissett will land this offseason

Veteran NFL quarterback Jacoby Brissett is going into the offseason looking for a new team. With him, he will bring a veteran presence and leadership to a team in need of depth or help more generally at quarterback.

Ahead of the offseason, ESPN issued a prediction for where Brissett could end up, with beat reporter Mike Reiss predicting that he’ll land with the New England Patriots.

“The Patriots are most likely going to address the starting quarterback spot in the draft, but this move allows for some veteran competition and a fallback if the first-round pick isn’t ready yet,” Reiss wrote. “Brissett signed a one-year, $8 million deal in Washington last year, so the financial terms here seem to be in line with his market.”

So, what would a contract for Jacoby Brissett look like in New England? Mike Reiss has an answer for that too.

“Two years, $15 million, with $7.5 million guaranteed and a signing bonus. We can also build in incentives based on starts.”

Jacoby Brissett actually began his career in New England, having been a third round pick of the team in 2016. That year, he even started for New England in place of the suspended Tom Brady and went on to win a Super Bowl with the team, though he wasn’t active for that game. He would be traded to the Indianapolis Colts for the 2017 season while Andrew Luck dealt an injury.

In total, Brissett has played for five NFL teams during his eight year NFL career. Most recently, he was with the Washington Commanders where he played in three games without getting a start. He threw for 224 yards and three touchdowns in 2023.

Over the course of his entire career, Brissett has played in 79 games, starting 48. He has a career completion percentage of 61.3 percent and has thrown 51 touchdowns to 23 interceptions.

If Jacoby Brissett does return to New England, he would offer a younger quarterback mentorship while potentially buying that young quarterback time to adjust to the speed of the NFL.

Mel Kiper makes case for New England Patriots to draft Drake Maye

It looks like the Patriots will take a quarterback third overall, with ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. saying New England should take Drake Maye.

“The third pick’s a quarterback. The number three quarterback, in recent years, has been pretty good overall really go back into history with Ben Roethlisberger behind [Phillip] Rivers and [Eli] Manning; Josh Allen behind [Sam] Darnold and Baker [Mayfield]. Think about [Justin] Herbert behind Tua [Tagovailoa] and Joe Burrow,” Kiper said.

“You look at Drake Maye to be number three overall. Why is he three, not two or one? Had some struggles. He had some games that made you scratch [your] head saying, ‘What’s going on here?’ NC State game [he had] a couple of picks; he’s at 58 percent. [In the] Virginia game, they are a big favorite, 24-point favorite. He struggled with throws that he should have completed in that game. But he had a new coordinator; he didn’t have Josh Downs.”
