Eagles take below-market deal from Jets for Haason Reddick

The Eagles’ trade of linebacker Haason Reddick looks bad on paper and worse when compared to a pair of deals made by the rival Commanders.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Philadelphia has sent edge-rusher Haason Reddick to the New York Jets for a conditional third-round pick in 2026. It becomes a second-round pick if Reddick has 67.5% playtime and 10 or more sacks in 2024.

Per Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz, Reddick -- who had one year left on his deal -- wanted an extension with the Eagles but did not want to get traded.

New York will take on Reddick’s $14.5M salary, but the Eagles are responsible for a $1M roster bonus that was due in March. Reddick also expects to sign a new deal with the Jets, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Reddick had 27 sacks, 87 tackles (24 for loss) and a pair of Pro Bowl nominations in two seasons with the Eagles. His 16 sacks in 2022 were second only to the 49ers’ Nick Bosa. So why did the team get so little in return for such a talented player?

Last year, the Washington Commanders had a pair of edge-rushers, Montez Sweat and Chase Young, each playing in the final year of their contracts. Sweat led the team after eight weeks with 6.5 sacks but was dealt to the Bears for a second-round pick in 2024.

Young had five sacks in seven games after putting up just 1.5 sacks in 12 games across two injury-filled seasons with Washington. He was traded to San Francisco for a third-round pick in the upcoming draft; essentially what Philadelphia received for a much better player in Reddick.

More often than not, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman gets the better of any deal he makes. He got first and fourth-round picks for quarterback Sam Bradford in 2016 and a conditional first-round pick for Carson Wentz in 2021. But he may have dropped the ball on this one.

Perhaps he wanted to get Reddick out of the conference. Maybe he did him a favor by keeping him close to home. Reddick grew up 97 miles south of East Rutherford in Camden, N.J.

Either way, Roseman better hope that new Eagle Bryce Huff can match the 10 sacks he had with the Jets last season. Otherwise, this trade could come back to haunt them both.
