Eagles reporter floats idea of team bringing back former Super Bowl MVP

This comes hours after backup signal-caller Marcus Mariota struggled to the tune of a 9-for-17 showing with 86 passing yards, no touchdowns and one interception while taking three sacks for 16 yards and posting a 42.8 passer rating during the team's 18-18 tie in their preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on Thursday. 

2021 fourth-round pick Ian Book is projected to be the third-stringer behind Mariota and starter Jalen Hurts, while rookie sixth-round pick Tanner McKee is slated to be the fourth in command.

McKee finished Thursday night's contest 10-for-18 with 147 passing yards, one touchdown and no interceptions while being sacked three times for 12 yards and recording a 100.9 passer rating. Neither Hurts nor Book played in the game.

Despite the uneven effort from Mariota and postgame praise for McKee, head coach Nick Sirianni said following the contest that the former No. 2 overall pick is locked in as the backup.

The 34-year-old Foles went 25-of-42 for 224 passing yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions across three games (two starts) last season in his only season with the Indianapolis Colts, before being released in early May.

Foles will be an Eagles legend for years to come due to his Pro Bowl 2013 season, and more so, for leading the team to their first Super Bowl in franchise history.

During the first season of his second stint in Philly in 2017, he took over when starting quarterback Carson Wentz went down with an injury midway through the campaign. Foles guided the Eagles through the playoffs that winter and ultimately out-dueled Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in a 41-33 victory in Super Bowl LII.

The University of Arizona product finished the big game 28-for-43 for 373 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception, while adding a one-yard touchdown reception on what has been dubbed the "Philly Special."
