We've got some bad news for Chris Simms, who has been late to the party in recognizing the accomplishments of Jalen Hurts and is now inviting the Philadelphia Eagles star to bark back at him.

“Listen, I’m not a jerk. I know I’ve said things and I’ve questioned him,” said NBC's Simms as he is in the process of unveiling his countdown of the top 40 quarterbacks ... which recently lifted Hurts to the No. 7 slot. "I root for him. I hope he’s yelling at me right there. I hope he’s going, ‘Yeah, eat that s***, Simms! I’m No. 7 now! I hope I proved you wrong!'”

Wild guess: Hurts, who combined with the Eagles to cease any debate about his long-term viability when he 1) finishing second in NFL MVP voting this past season, 2) helped Philly capture an NFC title and advance to the Super Bowl and 3) just inked a five-year, $255 million contract extension ...

Doesn't give a s*** about telling Chris Simms to "eat s***.''

Simms, the former NFL QB (kinda) but son of all-timer winner Phil Simms, is a notable critic of Hurts' ... to the point to where we sense that it is a bit, and that the analyst is actually just riding the coattails of the player by attaching himself to him in whatever manner gains the analyst attention.

It's why national TV people rip the Los Angeles Lakers' LeBron James and the Dallas Cowboys' Dak Prescott; it really has nothing to do with the marquee player's shooting percentage or his touchdown-to-interception ratio. (Sidebar: Simms ranks Prescott at No. 13, placing him right behind the Giants' Daniel Jones and the Vikings' Kirk Cousins. So, that's fun.)

Last year, he had Hurts at No. 25 in his top 40. The year before, Hurts' name wasn't even mentioned in Simms' top 40 at all.

But now, suddenly, Simms said of Hurts, “The ultimate gamer. I think you could argue that he’s the best leader in football right now out of any position. When you watch him back, he makes the right decision almost every time he drops back to pass. He makes a lot of big-time throws and plays that are aggressive. He’s a game-changing runner."

What's funny is that all of these things have been true for more than a year. What's also funny is that Simms still can't let go of the desire to attack the player.

"His flaw was shown in the Super Bowl,'' Simms insisted. "It was a 10-point lead and they were the better team. A lot of quarterbacks, if they had been in that situation, would have been vilified."

Or ... Maybe the Eagles were not the better team in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes? (Yes, Chris, the same Patrick Mahomes who is No. 1 on your - and everybody else's - list!)

And ... Isn't "vilification'' exactly what Chris "I'm Not A Jerk'' Simms has built a reputation on doing to Jalen Hurts?
