Eagles’ Fletcher Cox Detailed Idea Of Joining Steelers In Free Agency 'We Could Make Some Things Happen'
Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive stalwart, Cam Heyward recently achieved a significant milestone in his illustrious career. Following his triumph at the NFL Honors Ceremony, where he was bestowed with the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, Heyward found himself amidst the glitz and glamour of Super Bowl festivities. Amidst the buzz and excitement, Heyward took the opportunity to host his podcast, Not Just Football, live from Las Vegas.

During a segment of his podcast, Heyward engaged in a candid conversation with none other than Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle, Fletcher Cox. In a moment of unfiltered dialogue, Heyward posed a direct question to Cox: who does he want to play for next season in the NFL?

Steelers Earn Legit Interest From Fletcher Cox

To the surprise of many, Cox expressed a keen interest in donning the black and gold of the Steelers.

“You,” Cox said in response to Heyward's question.

His response was not merely a passing remark; rather, it was steeped in genuine admiration for Heyward and the Steelers' style of play. Cox articulated his belief that their combined talents could yield significant results on the football field.

“It’s all love. Just respect that you got for the game, respect that I have for the game. The way that you play the game, the way that I play the game, like we definitely could. That would’ve been nice. We could make some things happen.”

As a seasoned veteran with 12 years under his belt, Cox brings a wealth of experience and skill to the table. Despite the rigors of time, Cox's performance on the field remains formidable.

In the 2023 season alone, he amassed five sacks, 15 solo tackles, and one forced fumble, solidifying his status as a force to be reckoned with. At 33 years old, Cox, much like Heyward, finds himself in a battle against Father Time. However, the prospect of Cox and Heyward anchoring the Steelers' defensive line is undoubtedly a daunting one for opposing offenses. It's also one that Cox and Heyward would both be excited about.

While Cox's interest in joining the Steelers is evident, the question remains: would Pittsburgh reciprocate this interest? The Steelers have a track record of making strategic acquisitions, as evidenced by their signing of former Eagles offensive lineman Isaac Seumalo during last year's free agency period. Could the Steelers' front office, led by Omar Khan and Andy Weidl, orchestrate another impactful move in the trenches?

The Steelers as of late, have consistently demonstrated a strategic focus on bolstering their trenches, particularly evident during the previous year's free agency frenzy. Their efforts to fortify the offensive and defensive lines paid dividends, undoubtedly enhancing their performance at the line of scrimmage. However, despite notable improvements, the Steelers recognize that there's still more ground to cover in solidifying their trench warfare prowess.

However, securing Cox's services may not come without its challenges. With several other teams vying for his signature, the Steelers must present a compelling case and demonstrate to a 33 year old defensive lineman in the NFL, that age is already pushing outside of ones prime years. Negotiations may be complex, requiring a delicate balance of financial considerations and contractual terms. However, the allure of playing for a storied franchise like the Steelers and Cox's interest may help them, should they choose to pursue him.

In the realm of professional football, the alignment of talent and ambition can often lead to remarkable outcomes. The notion of Cox joining forces with Heyward in Pittsburgh is more than just speculation; it represents the potential convergence of two exceptional talents united by a shared vision of success.

As the offseason unfolds, the possibility of Cox donning the black and gold jersey remains a tantalizing prospect for Steelers fans worldwide. Only time will tell if this potential alliance will come to fruition, but one thing is certain: the prospect of Cox and Heyward wreaking havoc on opposing offenses is enough to send shivers down the spine of any NFL opponent.
