Dolphins defensive tackle Davon Godchaux could miss rest of season with biceps tear

The Miami Dolphins improved to 2-3 on the season with an impressive 43-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. That victory did, however, come at a cost.

ESPN's Cameron Wolfe and other sources reported on Tuesday that Miami starting defensive tackle Davon Godchaux suffered a biceps tear during the victory. The 25-year-old could be out for three months and, thus, miss the remainder of the regular season.

Depending on how rehabilitation sessions go, the Dolphins may get Godchaux back late in the regular season or the playoffs if Miami qualifies for the postseason tournament.

The Dolphins selected Godchaux in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and he had only missed one regular-season game before this setback. He enjoyed his best campaign in 2019 when he tallied career highs in total tackles (75) and sacks (2).

Godchaux notched 16 tackles, two quarterback hits and a tackle for a loss in his five contests this year.

Per Wolfe and Safid Deen of the Sun-Sentinel, backup Zach Sieler and rookie Raekwon Davis will see increased roles up front during at least the early stages of Godchaux's absence.

While there's no good time for a significant injury, this is particularly harsh for Godchaux, who is on the last year of his rookie contract and was auditioning for his first big NFL payday.

“Working with him is a treat," Dolphins defensive line coach Marion Hobby told reporters on Tuesday. "I think every coach wants to work with someone who really loves to play football.

“He’s very conscientious about practice. He’s very conscientious about his play. And he’s a great leader. His leadership in the room is second-to-none. We can always count on him as a leader … He’s really progressed, and I’ve really enjoyed coaching him.”
