Does Robert Saleh view Zach Wilson as a Jets failure?

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh insisted Monday he doesn't view the time third-year quarterback Zach Wilson has spent with the organization as a failure even after Saleh relegated Wilson to third on the depth chart for this coming Friday's home game against the 7-3 Miami Dolphins. 

"Had things gone exactly the way we wanted them to? No. I don't look at it as a failure," Saleh told reporters on Monday afternoon, per Nick Shook of the NFL's website. "I look at it as a series of unfortunate events. But I stand strong in the belief that Zach's going to have a really good career in this league." 

Saleh benched Wilson twice last season and most recently sat the 24-year-old during Sunday's 32-6 loss at the Buffalo Bills that dropped the Jets to 4-6. It was reported earlier on Monday that Saleh is starting backup Tim Boyle over Wilson against Miami, and Saleh confirmed during the afternoon that journeyman Trevor Siemian will be Boyle's primary backup for Friday's matchup.

Some are assuming Wilson has played in his final game as a member of the Jets even if Aaron Rodgers doesn't return from the torn Achilles he suffered in Week 1 until next season. According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, the Jets are ranked last in the NFL with a third-down efficiency of 23% and a red zone rate of 26% this season. Per ESPN stats, Wilson is ranked 30th among 31 qualified players with a 30.8 adjusted QBR on the campaign. 

"He's got tremendous work ethic," Saleh added about Wilson on Monday. "He's gotten a lot better over the course of the last year. He definitely has the arm talent. He just turned 24 [in August], so he's got a positive outlook, and he just needs to continue to focus on his game and find ways to get better and continue to learn about fronts and coverages and how to play the game a little bit faster. I still believe he's going to have a good career."

Cimini noted it's likely the Jets will decline the fifth-year option for 2025 attached to Wilson's rookie contract next spring. The club could also trade or release the second overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft whenever Rodgers is cleared to run practices.
