Denver Broncos named best fit for veteran free agent who was a first round draft pick
Steve Roberts-USA TODAY Sports

The first couple of waves of NFL free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft are behind us, but there will still be plenty of moves made by franchises ahead of the 2024 season.

Numerous free agents are still available. And the Denver Broncos were named the best fit for one of those free agents who happens to be a former first round draft pick.

CBS Sports named the Broncos this week as the best landing spot for veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

From CBS Sports: Want to give Bo Nix a chance? Allow a veteran to come in and mentor him while he learns the job. Tannehill would be a better placeholder for that role than Jarrett Stidham or Zach Wilson.

It's unlikely Tannehill lands in Denver, but he's the veteran quarterback this team is lacking. He has 151 starts in his 12-year career, throwing for 34,881 yards and 216 touchdowns with a 91.2 rating. His veteran presence as a starter and backup makes a quarterback room better.

Adding Tannehill would be a savvy move by the Broncos, but not necessarily for the reasons that CBS Sports mentioned.

Tannehill hasn't exactly embraced the mentor role in the past. When the Tennessee Titans selected Liberty quarterback Malik Willis in the 2022 NFL Draft, Tannehill was asked about being a mentor for the young quarterback.

And his response set off a media firestorm.

Tannehill told reporters that he didn't think it was his job to mentor Willis.

Maybe his attitude has changed now that he's nearing the end of his NFL career, but Tannehill certainly doesn't sound like an ideal mentor for a young quarterback.

But he could still provide value for the Broncos. Tannehill isn't the Pro Bowl quarterback that he was in 2019, but he's still a capable NFL quarterback. And he'll be one of the best backup quarterbacks in the league wherever he lands. If the Broncos want some insurance for a relatively inexperienced quarterback room, then signing Tannehill would be a wise move.

However, if the team wants a mentor for Bo Nix, they should probably look elsewhere.
