DC Don 'Wink' Martindale, Ravens parting ways after 10 seasons

Even though the Baltimore Ravens struggled through one of the worst defensive seasons in team history in 2021, the decision to part ways with defensive coordinator Don Martindale still came as a surprise when it was announced Friday.

"After several productive conversations, Don and I have agreed to move forward in separate directions," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said in a statement. "We have had a great run on defense, and I am very proud of what has been accomplished and the work he has done. Don has been a major contributor the success of our defense since 2012, and especially since he became a defensive coordinator four years ago.

"He has done a great job. Now it is time to pursue other opportunities. Sometimes the moment comes, and it's the right time. I am personally grateful for our friendship and for everything he has done in Baltimore."

Martindale, 58, joined the Ravens in 2012 as an inside linebackers coach and became the defensive coordinator in 2018. In 2021, Baltimore finished in the bottom half of the NFL in both points and yards allowed for the first time since 2002.

The Ravens were without several key players for extended periods due to injuries in 2021, including cornerback Marcus Peters, linebacker L.J. Fort, and defensive end Derek Wolfe.
