Dan Quinn continues to bring former Falcons to Washington

As the Commanders mull over Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye, former Falcons head coach Dan Quinn continues to go back to the Atlanta well to fill out his roster in Washington.

Dorance Armstrong came over from Dallas, and a couple of old Falcons friends did the same. Dante Fowler, who signed with Atlanta before the 2020 season, followed Quinn from Dallas and now to Washington. More recently, Olamide Zaccheaus signed with the Commanders, and now another Quinn draft pick is following.

The team announced on Tuesday that they have signed former Falcons and Steelers linebacker Mykal Walker. The 2020 fourth-round pick played three seasons in Atlanta, starting 20 games during his tenure.

However, the Falcons, who were transitioning to a new defense under Ryan Nielsen last year, surprisingly waived Walker. At the time, it was thought he could’ve been valuable depth with starting experience behind Kaden Elliss and Troy Andersen.

However, we soon found out about Nate Landman, who proved to be a more than adequate reserve linebacker. Eventually, the undrafted free agent took over for Andersen full time as a reulst of a season-ending injury, and he made the most of it.

As for Walker, the Bears claimed him off the waiver wire but never made a roster spot available for him, which eventually led Walker to the Raiders’ practice squad. He was released about a month later then picked up by an injury-riddled Steelers team.

Kwon Alexander and Cole Holcomb went down with season ending injuries, leading the way for Walker to garner five starts and appearing in eight games, including the Wild Card round against the Bills.

Walker will have an uphill battle to getting any serious playing time in Washington. The former Falcons linebacker will be slotted behind free agent signings Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu as well as former first-round pick Jamin Davis.
