Dan Campbell, radio host have feisty exchange over so-called 'lunatic decision' at end of Cowboys game

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has never been afraid to tell it like it is.

So when he was discussing Detroit’s failed two-point conversion that ultimately cost the team a win against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, Campbell didn’t hold back when he felt like radio host Jim Costa of 97.1 The Ticket, who called going for two from the 7-yard line a “lunatic decision” during the game, was being disingenuous in his line of questioning.

“Go ahead and say it,” Campbell pressed. “Say what you want to say.”

“I think [going for two] from the 7 (yard line), it’s a low-percentage play,” Costa responded. “I think your chances of winning are lower than if you kick the extra point.”

“Say it like you would say it to anybody else,” Campbell pressed further. “I’m on the radio — say it like you want to say it.”

“I thought it was a reckless decision,” Costa finally admitted.

While Campbell understands many don’t — and won’t — agree with his decision, he stands by the original call.

The third-year head coach admitted that he would have kicked the extra point had the Lions been backed up to the 10-yard line or further, but he felt confident in the team’s ability to execute the two-point conversion because they practice those situations from inside the 10 weekly.
