Crazy Rumor: Did Bills Ex Kill a Bald Eagle?
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

Maybe you've got to be a little crazy to play special teams in the NFL. But not crazy enough to hunt and kill a bald eagle ... right?

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie, the former Buffalo Bills fan favorite, was suspended for the final three games of this NFL regular season for unspecified "conduct detrimental to the team."

And right about now, McKenzie probably wishes the "conduct'' was more "specified,'' as the internet - frankly, being the conversational cesspool that it too often is - has offered up a bizarre conspiracy theory ... that has the 28-year-old McKenzie feeling obliged to ... well, shoot down.

"It’s 2024 so let start fresh," McKenzie wrote on social media. "First things first I did not kill a bald eagle. That story is false."

How did that rumor get started? It is unclear. ... but there are no shortage of "clever'' people on the internet who get their amusement from starting such rumors.

Working on the assumption that McKenzie is telling the truth and that the rumor is "false''? That's a good think, because in addition to the very, very bad look of having taken an action like this, he would be facing something more damning than the three-game suspension.

He'd be in trouble with the law. Killing a bald eagle can lead to a $100,000 fine, up to one-year imprisonment, or both.

After five seasons with the Bills, McKenzie joined the Colts in 2023 and had been their top punt returner before the suspension by Indy, which like Buffalo enters the NFL's Week 18 finale with hopes of playoff success.

Indianapolis is in the playoff picture at 9-7 and can clinch a playoff berth with a win over the Texans on Saturday night.

It's unclear if McKenzie and teammate Troy Brown, also involved in the rumor, would get reinstated for the playoffs.
