Commanders workout two punters as Tress Way has back tightness
Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Tress Way has been a mainstay for the Washinton Commanders. The punter is the longest-tenured Commanders player, joining the team in 2014. He’s become a fan favorite. Thus, fans would be concerned about the Commanders working out other punters.

The Commanders worked out two punters following Monday’s practice. Head coach Ron Rivera explained that Way has “a little tightness” in his lower back, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.

Rivera did try to squash the concern, saying Way expects to play in Friday’s preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.

It’s unclear what punters the Commanders worked out. But Rivera noted one was left-footed and the other kicked right.

During Monday’s practice, wide receiver/kick returner Dax Milne filled in for Way as the holder on field goal attempts.

Tress Way made his second Pro Bowl last season, averaging 46.8 yards per punt. Hopefully, the tightness in his back is just minor, and Way will be able to mend by the regular season. Punters love reps, but it will be interesting to see if the Commanders weigh on the side of precaution with Way for Friday’s game.
