Colts QB Carson Wentz could need foot surgery, miss start of season?

News broke earlier on Friday that often-injured Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz is out indefinitely with a foot ailment he suffered late in Thursday's practice.

The update isn't promising, although the Colts don't necessarily need to be reaching for the panic button with August quickly approaching.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport (h/t Nick Shook) report that Wentz is scheduled to meet with foot specialist Robert Anderson soon to determine the exact nature of the injury. It's likely the 28-year-old won't play during the preseason, and it's possible he could remain sidelined through at least the start of the regular season in September if he requires surgery to repair the issue.

NFL Media's Michael Silver added:

Wentz joined the Colts from the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason to reunite with Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich and offensive assistant Press Taylor, who helped guide the signal-caller during their stints in the City of Brotherly Love.

Jacob Eason, 2020 fourth-round pick, is currently second on the depth chart and would start for the Colts at quarterback if they played this weekend. The Colts do, however, have time to trade for a proven commodity.

For what it's worth, the Chicago Bears are likely shopping Super Bowl LII Most Valuable Player and former Wentz backup Nick Foles to any would-be buyers this summer.
