Chris Olave says Derek Carr brings a different vibe to the New Orleans Saints
Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

Derek Carr has never taken an NFL snap while not wearing a Raiders uniform. Now, the four-time Pro Bowler will do exactly that after joining the New Orleans Saints this offseason.

It’s a big change for the 32-year-old but, according to WR Chris Olave, it’s just as big of a change for the Saints. From what he recently said on NFL Live, the vibe around New Orleans’ franchise has been a new one with Carr set to take over as their QB1.

“I feel like it’s a different vibe around the building, having him behind center, having him as a leader on and off the field,” said Olave. “We’re excited for this year and we can’t wait to start the year off.”

While Carr might not be in the upper echelon at his position, he’s nothing but consistent. He has thrown for over 3,200 passing yards in every season as a pro and has only had one year with less than 20 touchdowns. He has done so as a starter since the moment when he came into the league with 142 now under his belt.

With his addition, Olave and the Saints know what they can do in the NFC South. At this moment, though, they’re working on themselves in order to start the season off on the right foot come the opening kickoff against the Tennessee Titans in September.

“We’re excited,” said Olave. “We’re not really worried about other teams in the division. We know we’re going to have to play each team twice but we’re trying to work on our team, ourselves.”

“Always just trying to be the best team we can. We know we had a down season last year but we’ve got a really good roster,” Olave said. “We’re competing every day in training camp this year to try and develop and get back and get ready for Week 1.”

Olave shares what he has worked on for next season

Chris Olave was one of the most impressive rookies in the NFL last season. Now, he’s working hard to improve on his standout season.

Given that the New Orleans Saints figure to have a more consistent offense in 2023, Olave revealed some points of emphasis that he has been working on individually this offseason.

“I’m just trying to get stronger was one of the main points,” Olave said during Saturday’s NFL Live. “Gain a couple of pounds this offseason and ready to get to work this year. And playing through the catch is also another one, to answer your question.”

One year ago, the Ohio State product put up 72 receptions, 1,042 receiving yards, and four touchdowns. He was named a finalist for the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.

What’s even more impressive? Olave was able to surpass the coveted 1,000-yard receiving mark with a rotation cast at quarterback. The position was in flux all season long. The former rookie caught passes from Jameis WinstonAndy Dalton , and Taysom Hill last season. That lack of continuity would hinder most players, but Olave is skillful enough to make it work.

That won’t be the case anymore. The Saints have since found their quarterback in former Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr. He’s expected to turn around the decline in New Orleans since the retirement of Drew Brees in 2021.
