Chiefs HC Andy Reid: Kadarius Toney is healthy, will go through 'gradual process'

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid insisted Monday that often-injured wide receiver Kadarius Toney is healthy following last week's trade.

"I'm not expecting him to learn the whole offense in a day,'' Reid said about Toney when speaking with reporters on Monday coming off the team's bye week, per Adam Teicher of ESPN. "I think it will be a gradual process going forward, even though he is a smart kid, so I'm sure he'll pick it up relatively fast.

"He hasn't played for a few weeks here. So getting him back in the swing of things and the speed of it and all will be important and then we'll just see. But he's a nice addition. I'm just not going to rush him into something that he's not comfortable with or I'm not comfortable with.''

The Chiefs officially acquired Toney from the New York Giants ahead of the weekend for a compensatory third-round pick and a sixth-round choice. With the Giants, the 2021 first-round draft selection last played in Week 2 on Sept. 18 and has missed time this fall due to lingering hamstring issues.

Before the transaction, it was reported that New York general manager Joe Schoen "probably would like to be done with" Toney in part because the 23-year-old wasn't contributing during games. Toney has thus far played in only 12 career NFL contests and recorded 41 catches for 420 yards and zero touchdowns during his Giants tenure.

After news of the trade broke this past Thursday, Toney suggested via a since-deleted tweet that he was no longer "actually hurt still."

"We've got a handful of guys that are very capable and I joke about it, but I mean you have one football and you can only spread it around to one person at a time,'' Reid said about adding Toney to an offense that features Most Valuable Player quarterback Patrick Mahomes. "We try to (utilize) everybody's strengths and then work on whatever weaknesses they have. That allows us to get guys in at least a decent position to do what we think they can do best. It won't be any different with him than the other guys.''

Toney presumably will make his Kansas City debut when the 5-2 Chiefs host the 5-2 Tennessee Titans this coming Sunday night.
