Chargers Have Interviewed Intriguing Assistant For Head Coaching Job
Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

With the disaster that was the 2023 NFL season now over for the Los Angeles Chargers, they have started to turn their attention to how they will clean up their mess.

Their first job is to interview head coaching candidates and decide who will be on the sidelines for them when next season commences in September.

It appears they’re casting a wide net. They’re reportedly very interested in Jim Harbaugh, the former San Francisco 49ers head coach who just guided the University of Michigan to the College Football Playoff National Championship over the University of Washington on Monday. Los Angeles has also asked the Niners for permission to interview Steve Wilks, who is currently their defensive coordinator.

But there is also the possibility that the team will hire from within, as it has interviewed Kellen Moore, its own offensive coordinator, for the job.

“The Chargers on Tuesday confirmed they have interviewed Kellen Moore for their head coach position,” wrote Omar Navarro.

The Bolts hired Moore prior to this season after its offense greatly underperformed in 2022 despite the presence of one of the NFL’s most physically gifted quarterbacks in Justin Herbert. He had previously spent four seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, who finished first in total yards twice during that time.

Unfortunately, L.A.’s offense didn’t post the improvement that some expected, although at least some of that was due to injuries that sidelined wide receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen and running back Austin Ekeler.

The franchise is in a situation where its fans are extremely frustrated and looking for some bold moves that will turn its fortunes around. Harbaugh is someone many have been calling for it to hire, as his resume is impressive, and he knows how to build a winning culture, something the Chargers need.

Simply promoting Moore to head coach may disappoint many fans. It would then be on Moore to prove he has what it takes to turn the perpetually tortured Chargers into winners.
